gut health testing
“All Disease Begins in the Gut.” – Hippocrates
At Vitality Wellness Center, we believe that gut health has a strong link to the health of other systems and processes in the body. All too often, the gut is overlooked as a contributing cause to issues like thyroid dysfunction, skin conditions, energy levels, mental health, etc. We offer education on and testing for gut health and love to show patients how a healthy gut leads to improved wellbeing overall!
Why test your gut health?
It is so common to overlook the health the gut when trying to determine the cause of troublesome medical issues, and the importance of gut health is often forgotten. This can lead to ongoing health issues that never get resolved because the root issue is not addressed.
The gastrointestinal tract contains 10 times more health determining bacteria than the rest of the body, which helps protect us from infections, supports the metabolism, and promotes healthy digestion and elimination. If the gut is compromised then so many other systems will be as well.
So many factors can contribute to poor gut health- medications, diet, chemicals, etc. The typical “American diet” is a huge contributor to major issues- we are constantly exposed to chemicals and potential toxins in our foods, and many foods contain high amounts of sugar and are highly processed. Food labels show ingredients we can’t even pronounce, yet they are consumed daily by millions. This sets us up for gut issues from a young age and develops long term health issues for many people. Overuse of antibiotics and other medications- such as anti-inflammatories, birth control, antacids, etc- also contribute to imbalances in the microbial balance of the gut.
Long term, these imbalances in the bacteria in the gut can lead to problems like an overgrowth of bad bacteria or yeast, deficiencies in digestive enzymes, suppression of the GI immune system, and food sensitivities, just to name a few, which then leads to a variety of symptoms.
What are symptoms of gut imbalances?
An imbalance or overgrowth can cause a variety of symptoms including:
- Gas or bloating
- Abdominal pain
- GERD or heartburn
- Autoimmune disorders
- Headaches or migraines
- Hormonal imbalances
- Fatigue/Poor sleep
- Hives, rash, eczema, or other skin conditions
- Joint pain and inflammation
- Decreased immune function
- Poor absorption of vitamins and minerals
How do I know if I should be tested?
If you are frequently experiencing any of the above listed symptoms and have been unable to determine a cause, you should consider gut health testing. Also patients who suffer with gut disorders such as IBS, depression, anxiety, autism, and autoimmune disorders such as fibromyalgia and Hashimoto’s should consider this testing.
Gut health testing requires the collection of stool samples that are sent to a lab for analysis. This collection is completed in the comfort of your own home and done at your convenience, then sent directly to the lab for process. All supplies and shipping materials are provided.
How much does this cost?
We do our best to keep all testing and treatment as affordable as possible for all patients. The specialty labs we use have the option of insurance billing- this is determined on a case by case basis. We can submit your insurance for an eligibility check and let you know your cost before the test is ordered. If paying for the costs out of pocket, this testing ranges from $275- $400.
